Slightly humorous street signs… or interpretations thereof.

One of my recent habit has been biking around my town, exploring as much of it as I can before I head off to Cambridge.  During my travels through the dark alleys of Dracut, I sometimes encounter street names that make me chuckle (for reasons that may be opaque to others, but make sense to me).  A few examples are shown below:

First, Small Road.  Which, strangely enough, terminates rather quickly in a circle.

Small Road

It would have been funnier if it were a really long road, honestly… D:

Next, Presidential Circle:

Presidential Circle

I’m not sure if this is supposed to be some sort of commentary on the cycle of politics, but it might as well be.  Also, funnily enough, there is a Congress Drive in Dracut as well.  In another example of political metaphor, it seems to be worn down and less used, somewhat like the status of congress in our government.  (If Pro is the opposite of Con, what’s the opposite of Progress?)

I am also amused by the fact that you can write my name using street signs:

Christopher DriveMerrill Ave

One of those might actually be in Lowell, to be honest, but can you pretend you didn’t notice please?

There is also the developer’s nightmare of Jackson Street, which is shown below:

jackson Street

As you can see, there are two “Jackson Street”s located extremely close to each other.  See, originally these two streets were supposed to be connected… but after construction began, it was discovered that the land in between contained a large section of wetlands.  Out of respect for the species living there (and the legal penalties for harming them) the development company was forced to stop and leave the area as it was.  Nature has reclaimed the land, and it is often that you can see wild animals, majestic birds, drunken teenagers, or aspiring filmmakers wandering the former wastelands.

Additional facts from my friend Jess, who lives there (on the street, not in the wilderness):

The area between the streets apparently consists of all seven ecological biomes.
Both sides of the street are numbered with odd numbers.
The street sign is bent.

And last on this cross-town tour, but most definitely not least, is this sign on Mammoth Road (note that in reality, the lights are blinking yellow):

Senior Citizen Zone

According to my friend Roger: “This is where Dracut corals all of its elderly.”

  1. Ha ha…I once, in a fit of cleverness, asked my my mother that same question, about if pro is the opposite of con, then what is the opposite of progress? She was like, “Renee, just go to bed.”

Sorry if I’ve already told this story to you.

I enjoyed your tour of Dracut. PS: In Newburyport, there are streets named Merrill Road and Old Merrill Road (Old Merrill Road is the Jackson Street of Newburyport, apparently…there seems to be no logic to its layout). Ashley, Maria, Jess, and I have tried to photograph them, but no such luck. Sorry.

  2. Haha, I enjoyed this entry.

And yes, Old Merrill Road is on both sides of the street somehow. It’s magical, but not quite as magical as Narnia.
